The Tablelands, found between the towns of Trout River and Woody Point in the south west of Gros Morne National Park, look more like a barren desert than traditional Newfoundland.
It is thought that the rocks that make up the Tablelands are from the Earth's mantle and was forced up from the depths during a plate collision several hundred million years ago.
Peridotite lacks the usual nutrients required to sustain most plant life.
During the summer guided tours with parks Canada interpreters are offered these are highly recommended.
The distance of the trail is a 2-kilometer linear trail equalling 4-kilometer return. To get to the Tablelands follow route 431 to Trout River. A parking area and trailhead are on the left. Drive 5 kilometers past the Discovery Centre. Amenities include outhouse and garbage bins in the parking lot.
