Lighthouses in Newfoundland and Labrador #exploreNL

There are numerous lighthouses in Newfoundland and Labrador dotting the coastline.

11 lighthouses in the province have been awarded heritage status. They include Belle Isle South End Lower, Cape Anguille, Cape Race, National Historic Site of Canada, Cape Ray, Cape Spear, National Historic Site of Canada, Cape St. Mary's, Fort Amherst, Green Island, Long Point, New FĂ©rolle Peninsula, and Point Amour.

Fort Amherst is Newfoundland's oldest active light station. Located on the south side of the entrance to the harbor of St. John's, Newfoundland's capital city, accessible by car. It provides a breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean.

In 1970, the Coast Guard began the process of systematically automating light stations and removing staff from them.
