It was in the year 1751 that a group of the Moravian congregation travelled to the Labrador coast to set up a mission.A mission house was built is what is now Hopedale.
The trip however did not end well as Johann Ehrhardt, the leader along with six others were killed by the Inuit.
Following the Seven Year's War another mission was set up. It was though that Moravians might be useful in helping to end the endemic warfare between Europeans and Inuit which made southern Labrador and the Strait of Belle Isle a dangerous place.
During the 19th century there were between 30 and 40 missionaries on the coast at any one time, most of them Germans.
Today some Moravian congregations exist still in Labrador's Inuit communities.
