History Lesson: Newfoundland Attempted to sell Labrador to Canada #nlpoli

Newfoundland has attempted on four separate occasions to sell Labrador to Canada. This was of course prior to Newfoundland joining confederation with Canada.

Richard Squires wanted to sell Labrador in 1922, during first term as prime minister.

A year later, Prime Minister William Warren made another attempt to rid Newfoundland of the Big Land.

Prime Minister Walter Monroe, believed that there was little potential in Labrador, he told the House of Assembly “this country will never be able to develop it.”

Once again in 1931 Richard Squires made another attempt to sell Labrador. The price tag was $110 million.
