The Life of Joey Smallwood

Smallwood was the driving force that brought the Dominion of Newfoundland into the Canadian confederation in 1949, becoming the 10th province of Canada.

He was born on December 24, 1900, in Gambo and died in St. John's on December 17, 1991.
His spouse was Clara Oates (m. 1925–1991).

The first Premier of Newfoundland served in office from April 1, 1949, until January 18, 1972, when he was succeeded by Frank Moores.
