Monarchs Around the World

Around the world there are 43 countries that have monarchs as the ceremonial or the real head of the state. There is also the Vatican which also qualifies making 44.

Seven of these are absolute monarchies. These are when one ruler has supreme authority that is not restricted by any written laws, legislature, or customs

Sixteen are Commonwealth realms. A Commonwealth realm is a sovereign state that is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations and shares the same person, currently Elizabeth II, as the respective head of state and reigning constitutional monarch, but retains a legally distinct crown from the other realms. These include Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica, Antigua and Barbuda, Belize, Papua New Guinea, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Tuvalu, Barbados, Grenada, Solomon Islands, Saint Lucia, The Bahamas, and the United Kingdom.

The remaining 21 are constitutional monarchies. A constitutional monarchy is a form of monarchy in which the sovereign exercises their authorities in accordance with a written or unwritten constitution. In some cases they share power with an assembly.
